3G Phasing Out, Is It Time for VoLTE?
With the JENDELA initiative, set to phase out 3G by the end of this year, we all will be transitioned to 4G/5G only network. Well, it's good to see that we finally ditching the 3G and with that, we will soon be talking over LTE. Do we?
Understanding VoLTE
From terminology understanding, Voice over LTE (VoLTE) is a switch to allow the usage of packet data and voice over the 4G network. In contrast, if you disable VoLTE, basically you are telling your phone to only allow data to go through 4G, and all voices go through 2G/3G. In practical design, all 4G phone support VoLTE. Just matter of the phone itself have the function disabled because of marketing strategy or older first generation 4G phone just don't have that function baked in.
What VoLTE can offer?
It's simple. Longer/wide frequency spectrum, thus give better coverage and faster response time. You'll get call locked in faster and because of the improve frequency bandwidth, your voice are carried over without compression which 3G network have been doing so to save overall bandwidth. So, when doing voice over LTE, your voice and what you are hearing is clearer.
Yoodo and VoLTE
That's the question. JENDELA is setting away 3G and we all will be on 4G only (soon 5G). In theory, when there's no 3G, all voice have to be carried over the 4G network. In some country, HSPA+ (3G technology) is advertise as 3.5G and also 4G. While it's not true 4G, this can be confusing. But based on other telco in Malaysia, 4G and LTE are used in the same manner. Different devices display it differently. Then, are we really gonna get voice over LTE?

Hi MUHAMMAD HAMIZAN BIN MOHD MISBAN, Thanks for the feedback. Kalau mak bapak di kampung nak guna data, cume redeem 1GB setiap hari di App Yoodo boleh juga dapat guna internet.
