DNB to charge telcos 20 sen for each GB of 5G service
Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) will charge less than 20 sen per gigabyte (GB) for 5G service to telecommunications companies, finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said today.
“In comparison, this is much cheaper than the current incremental cost per GB of 4G service produced by telcos at a rate of between 45 and 55 sen per GB,” he said during a question-and-answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today.
As the regulator, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will ensure that the prices are fair and based on cost recovery, and not to generate profits, he said.
“I have been informed that the 5G pricing process is almost complete, and it is different and much lower than the cost per GB of 4G service by telcos,” Tengku Zafrul said, adding that he believed that telcos would welcome the pricing when informed later.
He said DNB will also implement a 5G network through the single wholesale network (SWN) model for this purpose.
“The government is aware of the issues and challenges of SWN telecommunications in other countries, and has taken steps to ensure that the same mistakes do not happen in Malaysia,” he said.

Ericsson releases commissioned IDC report showcasing benefits of 5G
The deployment of 5G in Malaysia is expected to serve as an economic and innovation driver for the country, according to a new study by IDC.
In a statement, the telecommunication vendor supplying 5G gear to Malaysia claimed that the technology is expected to enhance Malaysia's global and regional competitiveness, accelerate Industry 4.0 and enable new digital services in the consumer and enterprise spaces.
It claimed that by providing Malaysia with secure, robust connectivity and infrastructure, 5G also sets the foundation for future technological and business growth by delivering higher data speeds, ultra-low latency, greater reliability, massive network capacity and an enhanced consumer experience for users.
The conclusions were based on an Ericsson-commissioned IDC White Paper entitled “Building a 5G Foundation for Digital Malaysia.”
The paper seeks to point out the potential impact of 5G on the consumer and enterprise segments in Malaysia, and made some recommendations for Malaysia's 5G deployment.
The study also emphasised the critical role of mobile networks (4G/5G) in accelerating the Jendela and MyDigital initiatives, Malaysia’s 5G readiness compared to its regional peers.

Singapore telcos get more 5G spectrum
Singtel, M1-StarHub and TPG will be getting 2.1GHz spectrum to support the growth of 5G services in the city-state
Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has made more spectrum available to local 5G mobile network operators to support the growth of 5G services.
Announcing the results of the 2.1GHz spectrum rights auction, the industry regulator said Singtel and the M1-StarHub consortium will be able to use the new spectrum to enhance coverage and capacity of their existing 5G standalone networks.
Both Singtel and the M1-StarHub consortium, which will get 25MHz of 2.1GHz spectrum each, are on track to establish two nationwide networks with full-fledged 5G standalone capabilities. They are expected to provide at least 50% coverage by the end of 2022 followed by nationwide coverage by the end of 2025.
TPG, Singapore’s fourth mobile network operator, will get 10MHz of 2.1GHz spectrum. It will be required to deploy a new 5G network in the same manner and time frame as Singtel and the M1-StarHub consortium’s deployment conditions.
It must also roll out a 5G standalone network with at least 50% coverage within two years and nationwide coverage within five years, from the commencement of its 2.1GHz spectrum rights.

Healthcare industry set to see change with 5G implementation
The implementation of 5G in healthcare can, and will, revolutionise the industry in the country when it is implemented.
Preetha Nadarajah, Nokia head of E2E solutioning sales, Southeast Asia, said 5G will be able to address challenges and fill the gaps where it is critically needed.
“One important challenge that can be mitigated is the distribution of medicine in rural areas. Imagine not needing to travel to the bigger cities just to collect medication that is needed for patients, but instead have it delivered into lock boxes which are integrated.
“These lock boxes will be set up with a temperature control feature to monitor the medication inside. This is what 5G will be capable of,” she said at the 5G TECH 2021 conference today.
